The following article originally appeared on our very own SVP of Marketing’s blog back in February. Here, Jason Yormark shares how Pinterest is not just for the ladies.

Okay, okay, guilty as charged for jumping on the blogging about Pinterest bandwagon this week, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t chime in right?  But at least I’m taking a unique angle by trying to be a little more helpful for the gents out there as it pertains to the most recent social darling, Pinterest.

I’ve been kicking the tires a bit on Pinterest the past few weeks, and it’s definitely something I’m finding more and more pinteresting (that just happened).  I do find myself spending time just browsing through all kinds of stuff, looking for interesting things that catch my eye whether it’s cool gadgets, food, style, etc.  However one important Pinterest lesson that contradicts all other social networks…do not follow everyone.  I made that mistake and my page pulls up a smorgasbord of wedding, women’s fashion, jewelry, etc.  Don’t get me wrong, I find mild interest in many of those things, but I want to focus on the the things that I’m actually connected to, and the only real way to do that right now is to stick to following like minded folks.  I’m actually starting to collect some of these things and can see how this will be useful to me.

Pinterest Gender Breakdown

I definitely can see the overwhelming amount of content learning towards the feminine side (see obligatory supporting chart above courtesy of Ignite Social Media).  Makes sense of course.  I’d love to see more stuff for dudes.  Gadgets, men’s fashion, cars, etc.  Slowly but surely I anticipate that will be the case, but in the meantime, I’ve done a bit of digging to help all of you dudes get a head start on finding and following some existing heavy users that you might find useful.

Pinterest does have a couple men friendly categories to check out right out of the gate:

  1. Cars & Motorcycles
  2. Men’s Apparel
  3. Geek
  4. Technology

Some Men worth taking a look at and following:

Also be sure to check out Drew Hawkins “Board of Man“.  It’s chock full of extra man.  And for some more interesting viewpoints on Pinterest’s growth, Social Mouths, Jason Falls and Erika over at Redhead Writing break it down awesomely.  Also have to give a shout out to my S360 partner in crime Molly Killien who posted her real world experiences with Pinterest as well.

So…dudes of the world.  Have you tried Pinterest?  What have your experiences been?

As a male Pinterest user, I highly understand your point of view. I can’t help but feel a little “girly” when using Pinterest because it is rare to see or hear guys talking about using it. It’s not as if the UI is girly; and if the background were to be of daisies and rainbows I probably wouldn’t use it.

Maybe it’s because most men are not that organizational minded (according to a girlfriend of mine), so organizing our interests into boards is not something that is common for a lot of men. However, personally as a – straight – man, I am highly interested in using boards and pins to create, collect, and share. I just often hit a wall on Pinterest because I run out of things to share, or people that are like minded to share with.

Thanks for linking those boards. I’m going to go check them out.

Very well written article, l recently got involved with Pinterest not so long ago under month if memory service me correctly. I am having a ball, when l get bored or can not think of what to write on my blog or what ever l am doing, l spend time playing and educating myself on Pinterest. The additional traffic and contacts l have made on Pinterest has really indicated to me, that is much more powerful then just a place to show off your pictures albums. I have now created a few boards, a fun board and rest is geared to my on-line business. Thanks for sharing a well written article…

    Cheers

I also made the mistake of following for the sake of following. One thing that is starting to help me connect with other similar Pinterest users is taking the time to add a better description for the images I pin.

I started using Pinterest because it suits my obsession to bookmark the entire webernet. I still haven’t quite figured out the social side of Pinterest though… nice to see some “manly” pins out there though :)
